Calvin Harris @ Zouk Feb 6, 2010
We were ready for the weekend, just not the density of crowd that awaited us (a stampede hazard for sure)* as we skipped down to Zouk to humour our pop hearts. At the centre of all this, the boyish Calvin Harris was pumping out fairly standard, inoffensive house fare; I’d entered with low expectations and was content enough to dance by the stairs when Calvin unexpectedly dropped a particularly minimal and outstanding remix of “Flashback”, bringing on an exchanged glance of recognition between D and me — just enough to bring home with me, to fit inside a memory.
* I swear Zouk is breaking all fire safety laws for packing in so many people in their compound. Thanks, Zouk, for reminding me what I hate about you.

After a particularly busy week of work (my sore jaw being a sort of stress-barometer), I’m on the rare outing to Zouk to catch one of my microhouse heroes. Born in Chile but based in Berlin, Ricardo Villalobos melds hot South American rhythms to scalpel-precision tones. His set last night was deep and heavy and absolutely pummeling - I hadn’t danced so hard in a long time.
